Benjamin Moore and Samplize have been partnering since March 2021 selling colored paint samples to consumers through benjaminmoore.com. Due to the success of the program and to give consumers another way to purchase Samplize samples in Benjamin Moore paint and colors, they plan to launch an in-store program.

I was asked to develop an in-store Samplize display kiosk that would be applicable to both Benjamin Moore Paint & Decorating and Hardware stores. I developed the display in collaboration with their design team to enhance the Benjamin Moore color selection process and help all customers by removing guesswork and simplifying color selection in-store.

Samplize offers a variety of color sample formats. Specific to this project are the 9” x 14” peel-and-stick color samples produced with Benjamin Moore® paint to provide customers peace of mind when deciding on the perfect paint color. Peel-and-stick paint samples allow for easy application and removal, in addition to the ability to view color samples from room to room and observe them in different lighting conditions throughout the home. The desired result is to convert color sample sales into Benjamin Moore gallon sales and reduce the lag time between sample purchase(s) and gallon(s) purchases.

My partner, Tsema, and I were shortlisted to propose a concept for a large-scale public art sculpture to be installed on the public grounds of a pedestrian pathway for a mixed-used residential development adjacent to the Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain Station in East Vancouver, BC, Canada.

When developing a concept for this public artwork, we wanted to consider two guiding principles:

1. We wanted it to reflect the essence of place and a sense of community.

2. We wanted our project to be meaningful.

As far as the “essence of place” we considered Tahltan First Nations naming conventions: Tahltan names speak to the spirit of place, never naming somewhere after a person, but responding to the personality of the place. Joyce-Callingwood is a transportation hub, a multicultural landing place, and a gateway to the city of Vancouver. It is not only where people converge, but also the cultures, ideas, and stories of the community.

Furthermore, we wanted to propose a sculpture that matters. By this we mean - how can this work speak to issues of environmental sustainability, “indigenuity”, the community of Joyce-Collingwood, and reflect our respective art practices influenced by First Nations and Filipino cultures. As both our practices have steered towards issues to do with water, as well as listening to the Joyce-Callingwood community representatives who spoke about the forgotten histories of water, we felt our concept needed to relate to water, community, and culture.

In our initial research, we came across the First Nation’s fishing weir technology as an example of confluence and sustainability. Using the understanding of the current, a weir would be set up along the fish migration. There would be a control point where fish could enter, and then be netted or gaffed. After what was needed was collected, the rest were let go to spawn the next generations of fish.

We deconstructed the fishing weir into 2 key elements: the tripods and the fence. We took visual inspiration from the refractive and brilliant qualities of light as it reflects off bodies of water. We want our sculpture to have a visual sense of movement like ripples and waves, and the feeling of wind skimming across the water’s surface.

Like the fishing weir, our sculpture is located at a major transportation hub and confluence, we are attempting to guide pedestrians and intersect the pathway, listening to the natural currents of travel and creating openings for people to weave in and out of the sculpture. “Confluence” provides a visually engaging landmark, as well as a unique spatial experience for both Skytrain passengers and pedestrians arriving at Joyce-Collingwood.

Public Art Proposal Concept, Vancouver, BC, Canada. 2022.

Fuseproject entered a competition to design a future preschool for the NGO, Abay Ethiopia. The main challenge of the competition was to ensure that the design would be developed to be adaptable to the proposed locations/terrains. The new school will consist of an initial construction of 4 classrooms, latrines, a covered courtyard and an open courtyard. Furthermore, the proposals should include the option to add additional spaces such as a multifunctional space, kitchen, dining room or a corral.

SoundBed™ uses vibroacoustic technology to deliver low-frequency vibrations throughout your body that quickly releases you out of stress response and into a place of deep relaxation and receptivity. The OPUS™ platform will include journeys, live experiences, guides and community to support you on your path to greater emotional fitness. When in use, the firm and supportive bed sits atop a base of repeating triangles. Hiding its technology and accessories inside its prismatic legs, the segmented geometry rolls into a compact hexagonal form that can be easily transported or stored away. We designed the SoundBed™ to be a beautiful usable furniture piece in any environment. It can be left opened and used as a seat or daybed, or smartly rolled for easy transport or storage. Its geometric form factor creates a unique furniture object with discrete technology hidden within its core. The SoundBed's colors and materials are designed to be at home in contemporary interiors. Taking cues from refined furniture the understated palette of softened natural tones creates a relaxing backdrop for the Opus experience, free from distracting elements. The quilted mattress cover is made with a 3D knitted textile for technical performance and tactility in an elegant taupe color with a coordinating pillow. The mattress is paired with a base in a warm, neutral plum for a rich, unexpected visual that’s subtle but inviting.

Fuseproject worked with waste*d, Inc., a benefit corporation pioneering the circular sanitation economy by creating new toilet technology, defining a compelling user experience, and redefining the perception and potential of human waste. Their mission is to develop, innovate, and implement a novel sustainable human waste management system for agriculture, cities, construction, event spaces, hospitality, outdoor recreation sites, and private land. waste*d intends to provide a full circle, self-sustaining waste approach that is environmentally balanced to support the people who work and live within these communities.

A cat tree designed for modern cat furniture and accessory company, Tuft+Paw. Four uniquely shaped platforms offer cats the chance to leap, perch, and explore new heights in the safety of a home. Eco-friendly materials such as sisal and wood give it a neutral organic look which works well next to any style of décor. Sisal rope provides an irresistible scratching surface whose oversized height keeps cats actively reaching.

Next47 is a global venture firm backed by Siemens. The firm's relationship with Siemens gives access to international markets, a global customer base, and technical experience, all of which is used to catalyze portfolio company growth. Next47 works with startups who are using deep technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, cybersecurity, autonomous driving, IoT, robotics and advanced manufacturing.

Fuseproject redesigned their visual identity to reposition and differentiate their brand in a saturated VC firm market. These brand guidelines help to define their identity and create communications and experiences that express their brand. This guide was then used as the foundation for creating their global environments strategy. In collaboration with design strategists, we offered direction on the fundamental design elements such as color, signage and furniture style to bring consistency to their global presence, while allowing room for every office to have a distinct localized character. Overall, the impression and tone of the office strives to strike a balance between the dynamic energy of a startup and the elevated aesthetics of a top-tier VC.

Fuseproject partnered with L’Oréal not only to redesign My UV Patch, but to introduce an entirely new wearable – UV Sense, the first, and smallest, battery-free UV wearable. UV Sense measures both UVA and UVB rays, and provides instant status updates while storing up to three months of data to its accompanying app. The sensor is battery-free, activated by the sun and powered by the user’s smartphone using near-field communication. I was tasked to help design a robust and modular clip system for the newly designed sensor that can conveniently attach to clothing or accessories.

PROTEUS™ is a project led by Fabien Cousteau, the first grandson of the legendary ocean explorer, Jaques Cousteau. His organization, Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center (FCOLC) approached Fuseproject to help design and visualize the next generation of the last remaining underwater habitat, Aquarius.

PROTEUS™ is designed to be a permanent, multi-tenant underwater habitat and lab facility for scientific ocean experimentation and discovery. Aquanauts enter with a submersible vehicle through the moon pool located on the first floor, where the scientists’ workspaces and research equipment are located. The second floor houses a communal area for the tenants to record video blogs, have meetings, cook, eat, socialize, and relax. The surrounding pods that spiral the outer perimeter are designed to be used for sleeping, storage, and utilitarian functions.

(Re)fuse is an assemblage of discarded artifacts, material unravelings, and studies created through impulse and experimentation. In response to my object gatherings in and around the town of Banff, Alberta (Treaty 7 territory), I created a series of decolonial design objects turning refuse into makeshift matter while questioning their perceived “function” or intended “use”. Expressed through rawness and roughness, my intent was to celebrate the inherent qualities of common products stripped of intended purpose. Through collecting, assembling, reconstructing, manipulating, and reinterpreting, these sculptural objects reflect a time and place and examine the enigmatic potential of everyday objects and materials. Ultimately, (Re)fuse is a personal study and exercise into critically questioning and redefining my role as a product designer while shedding light onto the playful connections and surprising entanglements I discovered during my time as an artist-in-residence at Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada.

Identity design and photography for ESLN Creative, the visual arts studio of Tamara Skubovius. ESLN translates to "my hand" in the language of Tahltan people, a First Nations / Aborginal group from Northern BC, Canada.

The DJ Trike is a vehicle for urban exploration and play. Inspired by bicycle and tricycle cultures worldwide, The DJ Trike was materialized to become a vehicle and platform for urban communication and interaction, as well a method to transcend common perceptions associated with current pedal powered transportation. 

By appropriating a utility tricycle from Beijing and re-introducing it into the context of contemporary urban street culture, this music inspired trike enables DJs to freely roam city streets and meander through the narrowest of alleyways. 

Powered by a rechargeable marine battery and a power inverter, The DJ Trike is designed to house the essential audio/visual equipment to create sensory-filled social interventions, project onto architecture and infrastructure, and use public space as a play space. 

Sliding rails allow for quick deployment and easy access to the platform contained within - making it possible to move from one location to the next without additional, repetitive setup. A side-access storage cabinet provides a space to store extra wires and other miscellaneous items.

The DJ Trike's mobile nature allows it to reclaim, activate and enhance public space. By creating catalysts for social interaction and public engagement, The DJ Trike redefines the urban experience by directly connecting to city street life through the creation of playful and interactive sensory interventions. The DJ Trike transforms public space from a neutral space into a collective, memorable place.

The Plant Platform is a prototype for a collapsible table system designed for mobile DJ's and musicians. Using the simple paper techniques of scoring and folding, a rigid structure can easily be constructed by hand. The flat-pack design allows for ease of manufacturing, transportation and storage.

A simple block and marble play set designed for both kids and adults. Hexagonal shaped blocks grooved with a variety of patterns allows users to interchange and control the marbles' paths. In collaboration with Andreas Schlichting.

Baltic birch.

A conceptual furniture piece inspired by providing "second life" to common, wasted and discarded materials. In this case, audio cassette tapes and misprinted tetrapak paper were utilized to create a unique table one could "unwind" over.

By making use of the individual elements and existing properties of a cassette tape, and shredding misprinted tetrapak paper into lengthy strips, a textile was hand-woven into an inter-locking pattern to create the table's custom surface. Two pull-pins release at each end allowing the table to be folded and stored away.

Deconstructed building facades and public spaces are reconstructed into abstract weavings and layerings of planar architectural elements. A backpack designed for outdoor adventures. It is large enough to carry essential supplies for day-long hikes such as a hydration bag, snacks, a camera, a first-aid kit, maps, and even a hiking pole or small tripod.

The bag features a large main compartment that can be accessed either from the back or top panel, and features an inner pocket to store small or loose items. A padded hip strap helps to carry and even the load while adjustable straps keep everything balanced and close to the body. The cushioned, custom back-panel provides additional lumbar padding and helps to keep air flowing between the user's back and bag.

Traversing through what appears to be an uninhabitable atmosphere high above the floodplains of the Fraser River, these images were inspired by the reflective and glowing pools of rain water, sedimentary layers of rock, and mossy surfaces found on the mountain. Vivid splashes of colour were digitally enhanced and painted to juxtapose the black and white landscape resulting in a surreal feeling of floating amongst the misty clouds in an otherworldly landscape.
